Boosting your Immunity: for a healthy body + mind

A strong immune system has always been at the heart of what we do at Purearth, as we believe this is key to living our best life. As 80% of our immune system originates in the gut this has been a key focus for us in helping people to create healthier lives.

Whilst everyone has their own unique immune system, we wanted to share some of the things that we are doing to boost our immunity and stay healthy in body (and mind) with good nutrition, exercise, vitamins and sleep so that we will all be in a much better position to fight off illness, stay calm and act with compassion.

Please note this is not an exhaustive list of everything you can do, nor are we medical doctors or trained nutritionists. We are mothers and individuals with a passion for nutrition and living our best lives.

Vitamins & Supplements: there are lots of supplements that you will read and hear about which can get overwhelming. Here are a few that we take and are generally recommended for more a more detailed plan or personal advice we recommend working with a nutritionist.

Vitamin C: Make sure you are getting lots of Vitamin C which does all sorts of good stuff for the body including contributing to the normal function of the immune system, protection of cells from oxidative stress and helps to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

In fact, news in China is emerging that therapeutic dosages of Vitamin C have been administered intravenously to help those with Covid 19. (Those are pretty high doses and administered by a professional) but in short make sure you get lots of vitamin C.

Vitamin C can be found in Oranges, lemons, kale, berries, tomato’s, cauliflower, strawberries, sweet potatoes and more. Our immunity boost and CBD Balance shots are packed with Vitamin C, but get it from wherever you can, knowing that organic and raw is best.

Vitamin D: This is a powerful nutrient for supporting the immune system, particularly the adaptative immune system and helps fight infection. It can be difficult to get all the Vitamin D you need from food sources so you may need to take a supplement.

Zinc: Another important one for helping to fight off viral and bacterial infections.

Probiotics: Look after your gut!

80% of your immunity comes from your gut. Flood your system with both pre and probiotics. Our kefirs have over 10 Billion live cultures per 100ml and our vegan broths are full of pre-bitoics, but again, choose what works for you and look after your gut in whatever way you can – kefirs, kimchi, sauerkraut, probiotic supplements. You decide.

Nutrient rich organic food and drinks: A healthy diet is key to your immune system. Flood your system with lots of lush greens and nutrient rich organic veggies. A juice cleanse is great way to give your digestive system a rest and floods your body with rich nutrients. After a few days the body moves into the autolysis process, commonly known as ‘self-digestion’. Your body starts to selectively decompose only those cells and tissues which are excess, diseased, damaged, aged or dead and starts to produce brand new cells.

Reduce/Eliminate Sugar: when stress levels are high, we often reach to chocolate, wine, pastries, crisps etc. Sugars, refined foods, and industrial oils all damage our immune system. Stick to things that nourish the body and boost your immunity. Try organic fruit high in Vitamin C, berries or magnesium rich dark chocolate.  Some excellent vegan chocolate we love is: Booja Booja, Om Bar and Divine Chocolate.

Sleep

Sleep is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy and recover if you do get ill. Get at least 8 hour a night. What the body does when we sleep is nothing short of miraculous.

Decrease stress

Some research suggests that stress is responsible for us to 90% of illness. When we are stressed, the release of cortisol (stress hormone) shuts down the immune system to conserve the body’s energy for running away from the proverbial ‘lion’. In short, stress lowers immunity and causes illness. Do what you can to reduce your stress during this very stressful time –laugh, try to keep calm, help someone in need, do something you love, get out in the sun and try to limit your time on social media, news and screens. After a certain point, it no longer feeds information but feeds anxiety and fear instead.

Move

Go for a walk, run, yoga – whatever it is that moves you, do it.  Exercise helps to boost white blood cells, (which help to boost immunity) and also helps the lymphatic system drain out the stuff we don’t need.  Mentally, exercise helps reduce anxiety and depression and boosts our mood by producing mood enhancing endorphins and serotonin. Combine this with being outdoors the in fresh air absorbing Vitamin D, and you can only benefit from this.
